Respite Care

Respite care for family caregivers who are caring for a friend or family member.

Caregiver role strain is experienced when a caregiver feels overwhelmed and may be unable to perform their role to the best of their ability. It can be accompanied by feelings of stress and anxiety.

Experts note that successful caregiving should never be the sole job of just one person. Caregivers must reach out for help so they get some downtime for themselves to recharge their batteries.

Too often caregivers neglect their own health as their focus turns to take care of a beloved spouse or family member. This self-neglect can cause increased illness, loss of physical strength, emotional decline, and well being.

Respite Care in-home care has been shown to help sustain family caregiver health and well-being. It takes the pressure off the primary caregiver, usually a family member. At Caring Hands Maui I recommend a few strategies:

  • Find an individual or support group
  • Be flexible and realistic
  • Practice self-care and reach out to community resources that support health, proper diet, and exercise.
  • Consider hiring an agency or private duty caregiver to relieve some of the duties as the primary caregiver.

Caring for a person under Hospice care can have high physical, emotional, and financial costs. The demands of every day-to-day care, changes in family roles, and finding a qualified home health care provider can be difficult. Becoming well-informed about the disease is one important long-term strategy.
